News Article- Joanne Harris, Principal. Welcome back to all staff and students to what, already promises to be a very eventful and busy year. I am, once again extremely pleased to be working here at Greenwood SHS. Congratulations to our 2009 Year 12 students who achieved very pleasing results;  41% of the cohort participated in the external examination.  The culmination of this exam is a ranking (ATAR Score) of 100.  10% of our students achieved 90 or above, 35 received 80 or above, 65 received 70 or above.  These were much improved results from the previous years with an increase in the percentage of students with a subject mark of 75% or above.  Congratulations to Robert Thomson (UWA Excellence Award, Marcus Chua (DUX), Hannah Reis (High Achievement Awards) and Stephen Geddes (ECU Scholarship). Our graduation rate was 95.6%

Our school priorities this year will focus on supporting and maintaining personal excellence in student achievement.  This means providing the strategies at the school level for all our students to attain the results they are capable of. Students in Years 8-10 will continue to be placed in academic pathways (Mathematics, English, Society and Environment and Science) conducive to their level of achievement, demonstrated capabilities and vocational aspiration. We have established extremely robust academic tracking and monitoring tools, particularly for our Senior School students, after school homework classes will ensure our classroom teachers are incorporating the latest teaching and learning methods.

We hope to continue and build on our 2009 successes in the sporting arena.  Though surpassing our Australian ranking of third for Cheerleading and twelfth for Volleyball will certainly provide a challenge!  As I have mentioned numerous times the partnership between home and school is a vital one to ensure success for our students.

I firmly believe that school communities must support all students in maximising their opportunities for later life.  To do this the essential ingredients are; a safe and caring learning environment where all members treat one another with respect, a high level of expertise and professionalism from teachers and a parent body who encourage their children to achieve the best they can and in doing so, support the school.

I look forward to a very exciting and productive 2010.

The helicopter visit to Greenwood SHS occurred on Thursday October 22nd. The visit was organised through Heliwest, the premier helicopter training and charter company in WA. Andrew Menzies, an instructor at Heliwest, offered to bring the helicopter to the school to both talk to students about how a helicopter works and to inform them about Vethelp, a government program allowing students to claim flying training costs in a HECS-like arrangement.
