Music and careers. The Greenwood Senior High School course may lead to:
  • TAFE accreditation for the Certificate III module in song writing, arranging, performing and recording
  • further studies at University
  • entry to the Academy of Performing Arts

The Arts

A well developed, innovative arts program is conducted at Greenwood Senior High School incorporating dance, drama, media, music and visual arts. All of these programs are designed to develop:

  • creative skills
  • critical appreciation
  • artistic techniques and technologies
  • cultural awareness
The Band 
Music is a prominent component of the Arts Learning Area and has been taught at Greenwood Senior High School since 1976. At present 90 students are involved in the music program from Year 8 to Year 12 with increasing applications in recent years, an indication of its popularity.

Through performance, music students have an opportunity for collaboration with the departments of drama, dance, music and design and technology. All students in the music program also undertake courses incorporating the whole range of outcomes expressed in the Curriculum Framework.

Enrolment

Enrolment applications are invited from students statewide

  • 40 places are available in Year 8
  • some places for continuing students are also available
  • beginner students may apply depending on availability of places
  • auditions are conducted in Term

The Music program is taught by experienced and successful staff with input from visiting specialists involves a wide variety of music genre:

  • rock ? classical
  • contemporary ? folk
  • jazz
  • includes studies as part of:
  • ensembles ? rock band
  • concert band ? choirs
  • stage band ? special classical guitar ensemble
  • incorporates studies of:
    • composition
    • history
    • performance
    • technology
    • theory
    • provides opportunity for extension work in:
      • madrigals
      • barbershop quartets
      • specialised instrumental ensembles
      • gives an opportunity for use of the on-site recording facilities and imminent radio station

Performance

The music program provides students with the chance to perform in public:

  • On overseas, city and country tours
  • at WA festivals
  • at Eisteddfods
  • at special school functions
  • at school camps and assemblies

Pre-requisites
• Year 8-10 instrumental tuition (through the School of Instrumental Music or a private tutor)
• Year 8-10 Class Music or equivalent (eg theory exams)

Commitment
• Continuing instrumental tuition
• Ensemble membership

Music is an integral part of contemporary society and central to the lives of young people. The Music course is designed to encourage students to participate in musical activity as both a recreational and vocational choice. It may serve as a pathway for further training and employment in a range of professions within the music industry, or as a means of experiencing the pleasure and satisfaction that comes from making music.

Students have opportunities to experience a sense of enjoyment and fulfilment, working in a variety of situations and striving to achieve at the highest possible level. Through studying music from other times and cultures, students will be able to understand how music impacts on their own lives and the lives of others.

The discipline and commitment demanded by music builds self-esteem, motivation and independence as well as encouraging the development of collaborative teamwork skills. Students will engage in creative thinking, problem solving and decision-making, enabling the development of transferable skills that will equip them for life-long learning. Other essential skills such as self-discipline, self-management, self-expression, confidence, communication and creativity are also an integral part of this course.

This course provides students with the opportunity to further their achievement of specific overarching learning outcomes from the Curriculum Framework together with the development of the core-shared values. In Music, students achieve outcomes through the key activities of performing, composing/arranging, listening and responding, as well as discovering music’s context in culture and society.

In the VET integrated version, students are provided with the opportunity to complete a full certificate and to achieve the Music course outcomes, providing them with a qualification and credit towards their WACE.

Pre-requisites
• Year 11 Music

Units 1CMUS/1DMUS
This course is a continuation of the Year 11 course. Students are expected to continue both instrumental lessons and ensemble membership.
